Dr Michael Davidson
Citizens of Here

Citizens of Here is Michael Davidson's post-doctoral research project based at SOAS, University of London. It builds on his PhD, which drew on citizenship as a theoretical framework for development of instrumental music teaching in England. Michael is developing a network of teacher/researchers and drawing on ethnomusicology to propose a world-centred music education.

The first stage of Citizens of Here, 'An A-Level Music fit for the 21st century' builds on Cheynne Gibbs-Singh's doctoral research which explored how A-Level Music is the narrow 'neck of the hourglass', restricting progression to diverse ways to study music at HE. Current and former students, academics and teacher trainers offer their thoughts. We propose how ethnomusicology may offer a framework to make the full value of music more accessible to a greater number of young people at A-Level.We are forming a working group to develop what an A-Level Music fit for the 21st century would look like. About Michael Davidson

Michael worked for Hertfordshire Music Service as a peripatetic teacher, workshop leader and development officer from 1985-2023. His PhD "Citizens of Here" focused on the development of MusicNet East (2012-18), the first Youth Music funded multi-hub inclusion partnership, and in particular, explored the interrelationship between diversifying pedagogy and availability of alternative progression pathways. Outcomes supported the development of Changing Tracks (2018-23), a national working group for musical inclusion excellence, in which Michael was lead teacher/researcher. Citizens of Here builds on this work to develop a national network of teacher-researchers informed by ethnomusicology.
